interview one on one with an art specialist
What would you consider the normal or average working environment (class room, alone, quiet, loud)?
ANS: I work in a classroom, depending on the lesson that I am teaching it can vary from talkative: when working on sketchbooks, and quiet when working on a project with a strict deadline or when asked to be quiet.
what is the annual salary is it fair for the amount of work?
ANS: I do not feel comfortable sharing my salary with you but I will say that I am underpaid compared to an art teacher in Ontario who is making as much as a high school principal here in Montréal. With experience I am able to go for a promotion.
what are the weekly hours, is it a lot or little hours? Is there overtime involved?
ANS: It varies between the school and their hours but the school that i am working at it is from 8am to 5pm, I sometimes work through lunches providing extra time and tutorials. I spend time at home correcting and grading so yes there is overtime involved
Is there any stress that comes with this job if so what?
ANS: Yes there is stress like any job. When students do not listen or work to potential. When grading artwork, evaluating skills and meeting deadlines and due dates are a pain.
What are some of the pros and cons to this job?
I like doing what i do, I am passionate for what I do, I get summers off to spend time with my family, and I get to help develop students minds. The cons would have to be a little bit of stress, and students who don't want to be in the art program or seeing those who do not appreciate art.
What kind of schooling or diploma would you need to earn this job?
I went to CÉGEP, and then university, after that i completed a course in specialization in art education. I finally earned a bachelor degree of fine arts.
What are the responsibilities that you have to deal with when in this position?
I am responsible for the students and their learning. To help guide and evaluate the students for their accomplishments.
What made you want to become an artist?
It was something that I had always loved to do. I knew this is what I wanted to do. I was born with the natural talent.
Are there any challenges you have encountered in this career? If so what and how did you face them?
Getting the job was a challenge, it was luck, I ended up teaching the course that I wanted as an art teacher, lucky enough I got good timing and I was in the right place at the right time. It helps that I am teaching in a school from the community that I grew up in. I even attended this high school.
How much work is there before you have to retire? Do you have to retire.
Yes you have to retire, you can continue making paintings at home and selling them but it is not a stable income, so I would not do that because I have a family to raise. I still 26 more years before i can retire, before you can retire you have to have a total of 35 years teaching.
NOTE*: this was a real life interview all questions and answers were recorded down on paper before hand.
thank you
